A Prayer for George Floyd

The song of now to which we bow,
Has taken 400 years to write,
By people of all colors black to white,
Taking us 401 years later in 2020 to…WOW!
If your skin is black, you watch your back,
400 years have taught you that.
If your skin is white you look ahead,
As you were taught, to not look back.
Both views have blind spots hard to see,
Others’ experience when they’re not free.
Blacks came in chains to build a new Democracy,
But the rent and pain were just too high,
in Hotel Hy-poc-risy just trying to get by.
In 1776 blacks were 20% of 2.5 million,
Fighting for America agin’ the British Cotillion.
All bled red blood & white tears,
But blacks would not be free for 94 years!
Then immigrants poured in, mostly white,
Citizens contributing their culture & might.
IF RIGHTS ARE DENIED, JUSTICE HAS DIED.
HOPE IS SCARCE AND VIOLENCE IS FIERCE,
EXPLODING AS ONE FROM IT’S FEEBLE CAGE,
THIS BEAST IS FUELED WITH FIERY RAGE,
AS LOOTING & SHOOTING OPENLY BURST,
KILLING THE COMMUNITY TO SLAKE IT‘S THIRST.
(As a white, I feel shame and awe,
Constitutional rights for all are framed in law.)
